well, connectiontracking does need some kernel memory (about 350 bytes) per
connection  you track.  What is your /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_conntrack max?  how
many connections according to 'wc -l /proc/net/ip_conntrack' do you have?

[still, the box should print some out of memory warnings instead of hanging]
