That's hardly a resolution. I think the bug should remain open until it's
resolved for real.

I think the development team should consider putting the project on hiatus and
work on the documentation for a bit. The world won't come to an end if there are
no iptables releases for a few months or so (critical and security-related bugs,
notwithstanding, of course).
