Yes. It's absolutely strange.

I've no idea whatsoever at to what the problem can be but is it possible
for you to tcpdump on both (or more involved) interfaces simultaniously
and capture the ping packets. It also would help if you synchronize the
time on all the involved machines so we can make sense of the timestamps.
Please generate such a list several times so we have both good and bad
latency cases.
