This is interesting, i nearly have a similar problem. my firewall
configuration
only works quite stable with kernel 2.4.3 !! here's my hardware config:

asus cusv board / celeron 633
onboard 3c905 tornado
4 port dlink with dec chipset

could this be the problem since oliver is also having a dec chipset card ?!?

iptables support compiled into kernel, everything else as module (currently
2.4.7)

internet connected via t-dsl, kernel pppoe, patched pppd-2.4.0 (on dec
interface)

symtom: firewall box suddenly stops. it can only be reactivated with hard
reset.

i'm currently trying to track this down with klogd -d -c 7
what else is needed to track down this problem ?!? configuration available
on
request since it's quite big and i don't want to post it here if not
neccessary.
