server with two NICs

Hello,

you can use several network cards and DNS for that purposes /but you will=20
get problems with caching clients on your local net..they will *always*=20
use one nic/. With netfilter (marking packets) I see that solution to=20
segment your network address, mark the packets coming from particular ones =

and DNAT them to separate NIC - this requires some tests.
In this case - before purchase - the best solution should be to buy a=20
Gigabit network card and a switch with a gigabit uplink (e.g. 3Coms) or=20
buy a card with 4 (or more - if you are able to find such ones..) UTP/STP=20
socks (and of course a good switch which is be able to collate them into=20
one logical line).

If it will be a real problem then let's decide on the side of the hardware =

solution. If time does matter it is the best one. I suggest you: if you=20
have almost all your hw then think about sw solutions..

Best regards,

I think that your server will not be limited by the network card. I think
the network couold limit performance, but in this case 1 or 2 NICs will be
the same. You have to speed up your network!
One way is using switch, or (if you can) divide in two (or more) physical
clusters, and use one NIC per cluster.
But I think that a database server will not use all the bandwith...

Subject: server with two NICs

Hello :-)

In a very close future, I'm going to mount a new database server for our
intranet. We're considdering bout buying a quite powerful one, since it's
going to have a heavy duty.. now, in order not to have it's performance
limited by the network card, I thought about using several ones, so this
way traffic will be shared by them.
my questions are:
     a) Does this has more to do with DNS or with Netfilter? (or maybe
both?)
     b) has anybody already did something like it?? is it worth?

I know this question is not exactly the subject of netfilter.. does=20
anybody
know about a mailing list about this subject?

Thank you very much in advance.

Best regards
