Help to run netfilter on the lattest kernel

Dear all

I want to try out the netfilter in the lattest kernel to replace the 2.0.36
ipfwadm.  I  followed the Kernel HowTo and get the new kernel v2.3.99-pre3
compiled as the netfilter code was fully integrated in the kernel. However,
I can't get the kernel code v2.3.99-pre3 to boot up on my redhat 6.2
installation.   Did I miss something inorder to boot the new kernel? Could
it be something about the devfs ( use of /dev/ide0...) that I read on the
Wonderful World of Linux 2.4?  Can any body send me pointer to successful
booting of v2.3.99-pre3 or later?
