Netfilter Project: Lightweight Network Director

Greetings and Salutations.

Having approx. 1 month of free-time and then 6 months of not as free
time
when school starts up again next year, I have decided to tackle the ominous
specter
of kernel programming. More to the point, I have noticed no good lightweight
implementations of any kind of a system to do Cisco Local-directorish
things.
(although without all of the bells and whistles). It appears that the new
netfilter
is the place to start.

Some quick questions
a) Does anyone care.
b) Does anyone have any suggestions
c) Has someone already started working on this
d) Any pointers?

My references so far are the three volume TCP/IP books, all
of the books on the linux kernel I could find, this mailing list and
the source code (what else does anyone need?).
