I don't like it either. The dynamic timer management of Linux is quite
fast and efficient, so if we'd like to rely on our own timeout
management facility it won't be trivial either. (Although the 'sweep'
timer would run much less frequently of course, so it's not so clear...)

If my memory serves me well, Jozsef made some tests using a similar
patch (or maybe yours?), but the results were quite controversial.
