Fwd: Does packet mangling affect the skb?

(Originally posted on netfilter@lists, but, it was suggested that I post here also)

I kinda thought that any packet manipulations done with netfilter (especially at the POST_ROUTING or OUTPUT hooks) only messed up that packet, and did not change the original data in the skb.

However, after I've modified a packet's payload (without updating the TCP checksum), the same payload reappears later (after the appropriate timeout).

If the skb is rewritten, how can I change the payload in a single packet without affecting the original skb?

Thanks for any ideas.
